Zoot: Fashion tips for spring break

As spring break is right around the corner, and most of us have been bundled up in bulky winter jackets and sweaters for the past while, it's time to start planning for your getaway spring break wardrobe.

Most men think that just shorts and just a t-shirt will suffice, but the truth is, if you are trying to get the ladies' (or men's) attention, just shorts and a t-shirt will not do the trick. If you are planning on going anywhere hot this spring break, it's time to hit the malls and start putting together your perfect wardrobe that will be sure to stand out from the rest of the muscleheads roaming the beaches.

The first step to a chic spring break outfit is a solid-colour t-shirt with either a crew neck or a deep v-neck. It may sound simple, but so many men get caught up in the branded or novelty shirts. Shirts with too much on them are very distracting and make any outfit look cheap and childish. Proper fitting, solid-coloured t-shirts are perfect on the beach and at the bar if worn with the right shorts. If the plain t-shirt is too simple for you or you simply want to change it up one day, try bright-coloured polo shirts with a well-established (small) logo on it. Brands such as Lacoste and Ralph Lauren give off a very sophisticated and confident image that is definitely an attention- grabber.

When choosing styles of shorts, steer clear from any cargo shorts because they are guaranteed to appear in the masses all over the beaches and bars. Chino shorts offer a street style look as well as being a lot neater and crisper — perfect for an evening look. The longer inseam keeps them looking modern as well as giving a simple yet sleek silhouette.

As most of your spring break will be in a bathing suit, it is crucial to pick one that is stylish and complimentary to your build and skin tone. If you are fairly pale to begin with, avoid any swim trunks that are dark in colour because they will end up making you look even more ghostly. Also, it's much safer to choose swim trunks that have a drawstring rather than an elastic waistband, because they tend to cut into the waistline, creating a belly whether you have one or not.

When it comes to footwear, the most stylish-looking sandals are the cross-strap sandal as well as the Brazilian thong (for the sake of everyone on the beach, keep thongs on your feet). These two styles are the most simple, classy and practical, especially when out on the beach and waterside. The main styles to avoid are hiker sandals, Birkenstocks (and any sandal that is similar in style) and the slipon foam sandal. These styles are extremely unfashionable, juvenile and are way out of date.

The most important rule when choosing footwear, is never, ever wear socks and sandals together. This may seem extremely cliché, but the truth is that many men still try to pull this look off, when in reality the only thing they are doing is turning their sex appeal rating to a solid zero.

With spring break approaching faster then we know it, it's definitely time to start putting together your chic and eye-catching wardrobe. Break away from the mould and avoid all the mundane trends this spring break and try something new. And who knows? Your new wardrobe may be the key to coming home with a lady (or man) on each arm.
