Growing up with an older brother, I always had a boyish edge. I didn't mind getting my hands dirty, and I didn't cry when I scraped my knees. Growing up with a brother also kept me active. And to be an active child, one usually wears shorts or leggings. Dresses and skirts weren't common items of clothing usually found in my closet.

This trend followed into adolescence and now into adulthood; however, here's the thing: with my love of fashion, I always love to be on trend. I love using trends to my advantage and making them my own. Especially with spring/summer 2011 coming up and the ridiculous amount of dresses and skirts that have been seen everywhere, I feel as though I need to hop onto the bandwagon.

For all of you girls who feel like dresses are too girly and soft, let me teach you a little trick.

Adding black to almost any colour creates an edgy look; however, it's the way you do it that makes it sexy.

Leather jackets, messy hair and studded bracelets add a great edge. Although I know there are a lot of Miley Cyrus haters, I dare say be inspired by her bad-girl edge. Think of Riri's Girl Gone Bad album or Miley Cyrus in fishnets.

Make sure that when you try to take on your dress dilemma, you choose a dress that is suitable to your shape. More specifically: if you've got it, flaunt it!

Ladies, listen, if you've got a great ass, nice lean legs, a great back and great boobs, show it off. There are women who would kill for assets like yours, and there you are hiding it underneath that turtleneck and mom-jeans.

Boobs: If you have great boobs, go for a deep v-neck. Men will appreciate it and you'll feel like a fox, but be sure to wear a great bra. Sexy doesn't wear your grandma's bra, sexy is all about black lace with alluring mesh and small details such as bows or ribbons — just don't overdo it.

Butt: If your butt is nice and round, wear something tight. Show off your shape, and let the world see what you're working with. Pencil skirts and tight jean skirt are great for your body. Choose skirts in bright colours; this will draw attention to your bum.

Legs: Legs are sexy, and glowing, toned legs are especially sexy. To find a dress that shows your legs off, look for something short. Prints such as pinstripes direct the eye downwards. Not only will they lengthen your body and slim you out, but they'll also trick the viewer into looking at your legs.

Back: Hilary Swank's 2005 Oscar gown, the navy backless number, is an image any fashionista should know and recognize. It's the perfect image of backless done right. She drew attention to her lean and muscular back by hiding everything else. By no means am I telling you to cover yourself up, but you should pay close attention to how you try to accentuate what you have.

One of the best examples I can think of when I think of women flaunting their bodies is a Sex and the City episode I saw ages ago. Conservative and quiet Charlotte didn't want to be naked in the spa, but once she took off her towel women were complimenting her left and right. Trust me when I say, you'd be amazed at how sexy everyone thinks you are. But if you don't think it, who will?
