In the jungle, the urban jungle

Each year, a group of dedicated students come together to put on an entertaining night of fashion and dance, all for a good cause. OHM Fashion Show's ninth annual event, taking place on Friday, March 18 at 7 p.m. at Centennial Hall, is supporting the Canadian Cancer Society.

Raquel Lengyel, director of the OHM Fashion Show, has returned as director for her second year in a row. "It became my baby," she said of running the show. "It's a wonderful and entertaining show for such a good cause."

Inspired by their generation's dedication to living 'green,' this year's show is called Urban Jungle. OHM is putting an environmental spin on the show, taking ideas from the jungle and plunging them into an urban setting. "You look at the trends going on in fashion, society and throughout the globe," said Lengyel when describing the process the team went through to come up with the theme. "Urban — the city, concrete … Jungle — animal prints are raw, girly, sexy ... it's the battling of the two worlds," she said.

Lengyel is also designing a line for the show, and plans to incorporate recycled fabrics as well as faux materials such as leather and fur. Looks in the show will also feature outfits put together using items from second-hand stores, showing that recycled clothes can create fashionable looks.

With this theme, OHM is hoping to raise awareness in our everyday lives, as well as in our style choices, about being environmentally aware.

As an entirely student-run group, OHM is dedicated to encouraging young talents, with designs from at least 10 fashion designers and dance scenes performed and choreographed by over 70 dancers. "We're young, we're students, why not give other young people the same opportunity? We're the future," said Lengyel.

Past participants from the OHM show include Brandon R. Dwyer, a Project Runway Canada contestant, Erin Kleinberg, a fashion designer featured in NYLON magazine, and Lara Smythe of So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

With the help of corporate sponsors, private donors, and all proceeds from the event, OHM is hoping to raise $10,000 this year. For OHM, is it important that their proceeds be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society because "it's directed to the research of all the cancers to beat the beast that is affecting humans," said Lengyel, pointing out that even though there are lots of great causes to support, the Canadian Cancer Society is helping to find a cure for a disease that has touched many.

Tickets are $16 and are available online at ohmfashionshow.ca.
