Interrobang at NXNE: Bobby's Diary #2

Dear Interrobang - It was with great excitement I looked forward to Thursday arriving, because it meant the arrival of the XM Verge rooftop party down on the harbour at the Skybar, above the Guvernment on Queens Quay.

Sugar BeachI managed to get on the guestlist for the exclusive party through Facebookery, navigating the XM Verge fan - and event pages when I could find an Internet connection with which to do so. Of course, it was way worth it - a rooftop party during NXNE with Dinosaur Bones and Hollerado? And across from Sugar Beach?

Seeing a bill of great rock bands is one thing, however doing so across from a musical landmark as iconic as the Corus entertainment complex is a whole other story; as a music nerd, it's a real special event to be nearby, and I confess that there were perhaps a few moments spent leaning against the banister, glancing wistfully across the street at the mammoth building.

I hadn't seen Zeus or Hollerado perform before, I confessed to Dinosaur Bones drummer Lucas Fredette after their set. "You're in for two treats, then," he smiled.

He couldn't have been more right. Luckily, my oldest friend Slava Sakhnenko managed to arrive shortly before Zeus took the stage, and we enjoyed the two great bands together before crossing the road to Sugar Beach to relax in the white Adirondack chairs between Corus and the massive sugar refinery.

Slava SakhnenkoThen, as is our ridiculous wont at times, we decided we would walk from Sugar Beach westward along Queens Quay and north to the Silver Dollar, where we kicked off our night of watching live music until close to 4 a.m.

The trip took much longer than I care to remember, and saw us walking across much of the lower Toronto harbourfront to finally wind up at College and Spadina, exhausted. Whether it's male pride (or foolishness) or just a sense of adventure within us, we never back down from a task once we've begun it, for better or for worse.

And funnily, as we left the club late in the night, I ran across Dinosaur Bones bassist Branko Scekic again, high on life and waving his arms in the air as he carried on a conversation with someone over on the other side of Spadina Ave.

"Branko, you look like a crazy person!" I laughed.

"I always look like a crazy person!" he said, before running off to some unknown adventure. Toronto is a pretty curious place, even at 4:00 in the morning.
