Lady Falcons kicking for championship

They needed extra time to do so, but the Fanshawe Falcons women's soccer team is heading to the final four after defeating the Durham Lords 2-1 in their OCAA quarterfinal on October 22.

Jory-Lynn Uyl was the hero on the day, scoring both goals for the Falcons and putting them in the championship weekend tournament for the third consecutive season.

Uyl opened the scoring in the 22nd minute by putting home a rebound from inside the box. Durham responded in the 31st minute with a goal of their own after a defensive breakdown gave the Lords a 3 on 2 break. Durham player Leanne Fomenko chipped the ball over Fanshawe keeper Sarah King, making the score 1-1 after the first half.

The second half of the game was filled with excellent scoring chances for both teams. The best chances for both came inside the last 10 minutes. For Fanshawe, it was Uyl who got in behind the Durham defense and sent the ball just over the crossbar. Minutes later, it was Durham player Megan Arsenault who had a clear shot at the net and sent her shot just past the left post.

After 90 minutes, the score remained 1-1, forcing 30 minutes of overtime and, if needed, a shootout. Twenty-five minutes into overtime, Uyl capped off her allstar performance with her second goal of the game and seventh of the season. The goal stood as the game winner and Fanshawe avoided the upset and ended the Lords' season.

Fanshawe advanced to the final four tournament, which was played October 28 and 29 at Humber College. Their semi-final game took place on October 28. They will play the eighth-ranked team in the country, the Algonquin Thunder, who defeated Conestoga 4-1 in their quarter-final game. Algonquin hold an overall record of 7-0-1, scoring 32 goals while allowing just 3.

The other semi-final game has the number two ranked team in the country, the Humber Hawks, facing off against the Seneca Sting. Seneca who are 5-0-3 on the year, defeated Sheridan 4-1 in the quarter- finals. They will be looking to upset the defending champions who are 9-0-0 this season and coming off 1-0 win over La Cite.

The winners of both semi-final games faced off in the championship on October 29. The winners of that game were crowned provincial champions and will represent Ontario at the National Championships in Quebec City from November 9 to 12.
