Career Week is coming up - are you ready?

Fanshawe Career Services' Career Week is running from February 6 to 10, and it will have tons of information to help you land an awesome summer job or your dream career after graduation.

Career Week kicks off on February 6 with a free workshop from Mirella Zanatta, a Certified Image Professional of First Impressions Image, entitled "How to be YOU and Rock the Interview." It takes place in T1003 and runs from 12 to 1 p.m.

"You want to have a professional appearance. You want to dress to impress," explained Christina Cook, Customer Service Representative from Career Services. "(Zanatta is) giving students a better understanding about what is acceptable when it comes to seeking employment as far as dress and behaviour." Students who attend the workshop have the opportunity to win one of two door prizes: a free one-hour image consultation with Zanatta herself, or an autographed book that was coauthored by Zanatta.

On February 7, the Exploring Entrepreneurship seminar will be presented by The London Small Business Centre. It takes place in T2003 from 12 to 1 p.m.

February 8 is the day of the Career and Summer Job Fair, which takes place in J-Gym from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We hope to have 80 employers who are attending again this year," said Cook. There will be representatives from police services, health care services, financial institutions, hotels, fitness centres, fashion design companies, landscaping and more. "A lot of the employers will be there accepting resumes and prescreening potential applicants ... It's a good way for you to find out more about different organizations and career opportunities." Check out the full list of attending employers at tinyurl.com/fnshwcareerfair2012 before you attend so you can prepare cover letters and resumes specifically tailored to the employers you're interested in, suggested Cook.

If you're interested in seeing what it's like to work across the pond or below the border (or anywhere else in the world), head to the Student Work Abroad Program (SWAP Talk) presentation on February 9, from 12 to 1 p.m. in M3013.

If life on the force is what you're passionate about, you'll definitely want to check out the Careers in Policing: O.P.P. talk on February 10, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in J2003.

Before Career Week begins, get prepared for the Career and Summer Job Fair with one of the How to Prepare for the Career Fair workshops, being organized by Liska Martindale-Dubrule, Student Services Specialist at Career Services — check the sidebar for dates and times, and register for one of the workshops at the Career Services office in D1063 or call 519-452-4294.

The 30- to 45-minute workshops will provide students with tips on what to bring and how to dress for the Career Fair. "I definitely pulled a lot of information from employers from last year's event, and that was one of the big things that we really need to stress," she explained. "(I'll also be discussing) tips on how to be prepared to market yourself, and how to answer those on-the-spot employer questions. As well, it's going to be about the do's and don'ts of the Career Fair in general."

"They're tips that they can learn for the Career Fair, but also for down the road when they're getting close to graduating or have graduated, and ways to socially network appropriately and to stand out from other people with employers. It's a competitive market. It's not just for a career fair; it's for networking in general for your future," she said.

If you're unable to attend one of the Career Fair preparation workshops, Martindale-Dubrule encouraged you to come see her. "I will see them one-on-one and go through things. I'll give them the handouts. I want the information out there for students, and I'm more than willing to accommodate their schedules." This goes for any of the workshops she's held in the past, including resumes and cover letters, interview skills and Internet job search workshops.

"I do one-on-one appointments and I do review and critique resumes," she added. If you meet with Martindale-Dubrule and make the changes she suggests, you're welcome to chat with her for more information. "I will see them several times over. I'd rather catch the mistakes than the employer."
