Following up with the handbook cover contest winner

Some of you may see Colin Sanford's work every day and not even realize it. He designed the cover of the 2011/12 Fanshawe Student Handbook, and now that he's almost finished his third year of the Graphic Design program here, he's surely got a bright future ahead of him.

"I enjoyed the Graphic Design program," he said. "The program is really good, a real eye-opener. There's a lot more to it than I originally thought." He said he has learned a lot in the program, and that his favourite type of design project to work on is branding. "It's challenging, but that's half the fun of it."

Though the program has been a lot of fun, Sanford said he had encountered some challenges as well. Package design was something he had been having trouble with, but when he successfully completed a design for a box of Quattro cookies, he overcame one of the major challenges he had been facing. He said he was very proud of the project.

After Sanford graduates this year, he said he hopes to find a position at a design studio. "My dream job would be to work at a good design studio doing mainly print and branding work," he said.

He has already gotten some experience in the world of design since starting Unity Graphics and Advertising with some friends. The company launched in the middle of the Winter 2011 semester. At Unity, Sanford has created business cards, flyers, websites and more.

When he's not working on design projects, Sanford said, "I like to listen to music, keep up to date with what's going on in the design world, learn and discover things involving design (e.g. finding good commercial typefaces, web design/development techniques, etc.). I also like to watch movies, (but I rarely have the time for that these days) and hang out with friends."
