Racquet junkies unite!

Last call for Squash League!!! And I really mean last call because the deadline for signing up for the upcoming league is September 28, which is Friday!

Squash league games will be held Monday nights between the hours of 4 and 9 p.m. in the J building. Each player is scheduled to play one match a week against an opponent in their division. That's right, whether you are pro or absolutely terrible, we have the right division for you! They include beginner, intermediate and advanced. Match times and court numbers are emailed each week to inform everyone.

The league runs for 10 weeks in two separate five-week sessions — so if you are on the fence about joining up or don't have the time, be sure to peek in the J building in about four weeks to sign up for the second five-week session.

The rules are simple: best two out of three games wins and games are played up to nine with the winner winning by a minimum of two points.

Naturally, we all get busy and the odd Monday game will not work out. There is no penalty for a rescheduled match, but no shows are considered a forfeit and 24 points are awarded to the other player!

Racquet sports in general have seen a huge surge in popularity over the last several years. Squash seems to rank up there and it probably has something to do with the fact that it is two people trapped in a small box filled with intense battle. Calories are burned, legs and bums are trained thoroughly and a hell of a lot of laughs are shared.

However, like anything else in life, we tend not to be huge fans of something if we're not very good at it. Playing against someone that is levels above you can get very discouraging and playing someone far behind your squash capabilities can get boring rather quickly. We've tailored the squash league to ensure nobody is on either end of this spectrum.

Players are then appropriately seeded based on squash season standings and placed in a semester end tournament that involves food, drinks, and prizes. By this point, players have typically grown close so it results in a fabulous evening of squash that includes beginner, intermediate and advanced bragging rights!

Students can always play for free on a first-come-first-served basis during operating hours. But if you're looking to up the ante with some light competitive fun, get to the J building and sign up for the October 1 squash league — you won't regret it!
