My Bites and Bytes: Dragonforce is all metal

Dragonforce — Inhuman Rampage

Inhuman is correct. While you listen to Dragonforce, the first thing that goes through your mind is “man, this guitar/bass/drum playing is INHUMAN!” Now, I'm sure that's not why they entitled their North American debut (on a US label, anyway) like that. Dragonforce now comes with a cheaper CD price tag thanks to the people at Roadrunner records and it's a fresh taste in the world of metal.

Now, with the word “metal” comes many, many different genres and labels. Although most times I think metal is metal no matter what kind of metal it is, to label Dragonforce, I would have to say it's obvious that this is good ol' power metal. But remember, it's not your daddy's power metal from the 80's.

Dragonforce blends intricate power metal riffing with almost death-metal like drumming and prog-rock keyboards. To mix it all up, the vocals almost have a Dream Theater-like sound.

If you ever have doubts that people can't play their instruments anymore, you can just put on Dragonforce and probably hear things that you didn't know were possible with guitars and riffing.

The one main problem that I have with this disc is that it can get kind of repetitive after awhile. Each song does have its own flavour and memorable parts, but you can almost pinpoint the arrangement for every song after you listen to how the first one is played.

The best way to get through this disc for most people is to listen to a song or two and then come back to it after a few spins of something else. In no way am I say that the songs will lose your attention, but for most people (and even some metal heads) eight, eight-plus minute songs in a row with similar arrangements is just too much.

I'm glad that these guys are finally getting the respect that they deserve with North American touring and distribution and I'm glad that I got this disc set to me by Roadrunner but even for me, I can't sit through this disc in one sitting.

I can, however, put on the disc with some buds, have some drinks and be in awe of the sheer musical ability of this band for two or three songs.
