Professor Shannon Webb, of Fanshawe's Lawrence Kinlin School of Business, was kept busy meeting and connecting with the college's community, while acting as president for the day.

Professor Shannon Webb from the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business joined Peter Devlin as Fanshawe’s president for the day on May 24.

The day was arranged as the prize for an online silent auction that took place to fundraise for Fanshawe’s United Way campaign.

The 2016 campaign started in September and ended on a positive note when Fanshawe raised a record-setting $115,153.

The auction took place between Nov. 28 and Dec. 8, 2016 in which Webb won the prize with a top bid of $306.

“It was a way to be involved in the United Way campaign and to personally donate, as well as it’s an interesting way to gain more knowledge outside of the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business and learn more about the Fanshawe community,” Webb said.

Webb “shadowed” Fanshawe president Peter Devlin for a day, to see what a typical day consisted of in the role of the president.

Webb attended meetings at both the London and Woodstock campuses that discussed the approval of the college schedule for the upcoming year, an additional day off school that will be tied onto Thanksgiving and a Fanshawe orientation day that will occur in the fall of 2017.

Webb explained there were some similarities in her job role compared to that of Devlin’s including being able to interact with students.

“A lot of my day is involved with teaching students, speaking with students as well as some component of my job is research based. We were out and about a little bit more than I usually would be and I got to meet many people across the college that contribute to the college outcomes,” Webb said.

Devlin, along with his executive assistant Cheryl McMurray, arranged the day for Webb to attend.

“Peter and Cheryl were great in hosting today. They were wonderful in providing information about the college and just the opportunity to learn more about the larger Fanshawe College,” Webb said.

Webb said that she hopes more staff members can experience the same opportunity that she had, to be president for the day.

“Thank you to the United Way for the opportunity as well as to Peter and Cheryl for arranging today and for the Woodstock campus for hosting us today,” Webb said.
