You've scoured through all the newspapers. Looked at all the jobsites for your area. Dropped off your resume at dozens of places. But still no call has come in to give you hope of being hired.

It's time to face the music. The competition is fierce when you are potentially going against half the city who are also looking for employment.

But there is a way to cut down the rivals.

As a student at Fanshawe College you are able to apply for jobs from the school. Not only does this provide you more work opportunities, but also gives you the choice to work on campus, making it a much easier commute for those who live on campus.

Career Services at Fanshawe host their own jobsite through FanshaweOnline (FOL) that is open to students, graduates and alumni. Sign into fanshaweonline.ca and follow the “Career/Co-op/CCR” label on the right hand side of the home page to access the job postings.

According to Darlene O'Neill, senior manager of Fanshawe College's Employment and Student Entrepreneurial Services, 25,139 jobs were posted on the jobsite just last year. That gives students a lot of choices to choose from.

O'Neill said that the reason so many employers use Fanshawe's jobsite is so they can recruit students who will have knowledge from their programs for the specific position the employer needs filled. This is why the posts on the site are sorted by program. It makes it easy for students to find the chance to work in their field of study. In addition, the jobs can also be searched under part-time, full time and/or summer time jobs.

Still don't think this is enough to help you nab a job? Why not apply for the Work Study Program or the International Student Work Experience Program (ISWEP)?

The Financial Aid office offers these two bursary programs for students. Work Study can be applied for by domestic students, while ISWEP can be applied for by international students. Jobs for both programs can be found on the Career Services jobsite.

Work Study provides an opportunity to primarily work within different sectors of the college. Students can apply for part-time work during the school year and for full time hours in the summer. You are able to work up to 10 hours a week for part-time and 35 hours a week for the summer. Some of the work is also geared to specific programs and students may be able to apply the practical knowledge from their courses to their work. Accepted students will not have to worry about the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) taking any funding away either as the hours are regulated so the income made does not go over the limit acceptable by OSAP's guidelines. Students must maintain satisfactory academics to stay in the program. ISWEP is an on-campus work experience for international students at Fanshawe College. It provides international students the opportunity to practice working in the Canadian workforce. You are able to build up a resume and interview skills that match the Canadian standards. A student must have a valid study permit and social insurance number to be eligible. Those who apply must also be a full time student in between study breaks and returning to the same program after the break. Good academic standings is a must. Think a job might take away from your studying, but you still need the income? How about giving peer tutoring a try.

Academically excelling students can help others struggling in their program to achieve the best they can do, while being paid to teach. Not only are you helping your student, you are also refreshing yourself on important concepts for your own studies. Students who have achieved an “A” or “B” in any of their courses can apply to become a tutor. Tutors are paid $11 an hour and meet their student on campus. The tutoring sessions are arranged between the student and tutor and should take place when neither have classes. For more information visit fanshawec.ca/student-life/student-services/peer-tutoring.

Aspiring to be your own boss? Want to get ahead of other entrepreneurs out there? Look at LEAP Junction for business building for the summer.

Throughout the year the program provides workshops, events, support and access to funding of projects for students and post-graduates who are wishing to start their own businesses. During the summer students are given the chance to sign up for LeapIN. The incubator, held once a year, allows students to begin to grow their company with the backing of a grant from LEAP Function. LeapIN provides the applicants the support, the precious time and tools they will need to start building the foundations for their business. The incubator runs for nine weeks and is available for any Fanshawe student, graduate or member of the community to apply.
