Let the races begin

The posters are up and the candidates are ready to battle as the FSU election for next year's executive council officially begins.

The race to watch is that for President. The two candidates, J.P Renzella and Travis Mazereeuw, have similar backgrounds in their involvement at Fanshawe, but both would bring their own uniqueness to the position.

Mazereeuw is currently the VP of External and Academic Affairs for the FSU, where he helped students with course, grade and scheduling problems, while Renzella has spent the past year as VP of Internal Affairs, a position that required him to organize Shinerama.

“The presidential race is the one to watch,” current FSU President Christine Thomson said of her successors. “I think we have two very different candidates running with very similar backgrounds.”

The winner of the FSU Presidential race will ultimately be the official representative for the entire student body of Fanshawe College. According to the FSU constitution, the president is also in charge of the “general management and supervision of affairs and operations of the Student Union.” The elected must also work a minimum of 40 hours a week from May 2007 until May 2008 and will be paid a salary for that term.

The most entertaining race this year is in Athletics, where Jonathan Hillis is running uncontested and has set up a makeshift video arcade in the Student Centre. Hillis is a member of the Falcons Volleyball team and will take the position as long as he receives 51 per cent “yes” votes on the ballot.

Some changes have been made to this year's campaign, one of the most important being that candidates are responsible for those actions of their team at an arms length. If a candidate's team member is caught in a malicious act (tearing down competitions posters for example), the candidates themselves will be held responsible.

This is also the first year the FSU is allowing Facebook and Myspace-type campaigning and some candidates have taken advantage.

The VP of External and Academic Affairs race is the largest of the seven pursuits, with current SAC member Arif Erten going up against new comers Tamara Bernard, Ben Milczarczyk and Jarius Patterson.

“I'm happy with the number of new people running this year, who are not currently involved in SAC,” Thomson said.

Like the VP of Athletics position, Mark Ruscica is also running uncontested for Board of Governers, a position that will require him to represent students at the board of governors meetings.

Current Social Justice Club President, Darius Mirshahi is up against Eric Blimkie and Sean Russell for the VP of Entertainment position. The winner will be responsible for organizing contracts, hunting down entertainers and be present for social events.

The race of VP Finance is between current Board of Governors representative Mark Loader and Chris Pressey, with the winner being responsible for the general supervision of monies within the Student Union.

SAC member Jason Wilton and Kimberly Walton will be competing for the role of VP of Internal Affairs. This role comes with the rewarding task of organizing Shinerama and other charitable and cultural events.

Make sure you pick up a copy of next week's Interrobang for the candidates bios and a presidential Q and A. Voting will be on campus and online beginning March 19 and ending March 22. For more information visit www.fsu.on.ca.
