Musical Ramblings: The one and only Megadeth

Ok...I promise, one more week and I'll have my “best of 2007” list ready. This is probably one of the most difficult years I've had in compiling my list. I have my top three already set. but to place seven more artists and their releases is pretty tough. Hang on...I'm getting there. In the meantime, here's another great release from the end of last year.

Megadeth
Warchest

I just have to start off by saying that this is a REALLY COOL package that celebrates 22 years (or so) of Megadeth. This package will please new fans of the band, as well as fans, that have been with the band since the beginning and who have practically everything the band has released (like myself).

First of all, this four CD and one DVD set spans the band's entire career and features music from all the band's releases except 2007's “United Abominations.”

All of the classics are here from the first couple albums that the band still performs today. I have to say that the songs featured here are all the re-mastered versions that were released by Mustane two years ago. When those were released, I wasn't interested because I think that you shouldn't go messing with the classics and their sound. I have to say, though, that after listening to some of the re-masters on here such as “Set the World on Fire” and “Into the Lungs of Hell” (both from the amazing “So Good, So Far…So What?” album), I may go out and get the reissues (on Ebay for cheap) because the difference in the sound is actually unbelievable. You can hear the drums more clearly, the tones of the guitars are tweaked perfectly and background ambiance is now more dominate in the mix.

For those of you who may have the originals and the re-masters, there is still plenty to gain from getting this collection. There are many demos, unreleased tracks and Japan-only songs that are now here for your pleasure.

The coolest part about this set is found on disc four and five. Disc four features a complete live concert from 1990 at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The fifth disc is a DVD that contains a concert filmed in London, England in 1992. Both these recordings are amazing and feature the band when I think they were at the height of their career (although Mustane is all drugged up during this era).

Yes, $70 is a lot to drop on any band, but for an excellent career retrospective, rarities, and a live CD and DVD (that feature different concerts), you actually can't go wrong for what you get here.

To top it off, the packaging is amazing (it actually looks like some kind of war chest) and also includes a really in depth booklet that covers the history of the band as well as every single release (album, single, ep, promo and special edition) the band has ever released.

Metal fans, get this one!
