There are times when people can look forward to one event just a little too much, when you cross the line from ‘anticipation' to ‘obsession.'

And this is one of those times.

TSN has started an online survey of sorts asking NHL and Canadian hockey fans to choose their 2010 Olympic men's hockey team roster- a full two years before the games are even slated to begin.

As a typical hockey fan north of the 49th parallel, I'll admit that I'm looking forward to Vancouver's hosting the games in Canada for the first time since Calgary welcomed the world in 1988. During those Olympic games the Canadian men's team finished fourth behind the Soviets, Finland and Sweden while mired in the middle of their 50-years without a gold medal to their name at the games. Not exactly a high point for Canadian hockey and its fans.

However that's neither here nor there at this point.

TSN stresses on their page that it's a poll they're asking fans to take part in, and will not at all factor in the choices made for the team in late 2009 (D'uh). But they offer up 53 of the biggest names in Canadian hockey at the moment including Rick Nash, Jeff Carter, Dion Phaneuf, Roberto Luongo as well as both Eric and Marc Staal.

The network must be shy of material if they're turning this poll into an one-hour television special they're advertising in February. Obviously the professional poker circuit is taking a brief hiatus from the channels afternoon broadcasts.

Then again, I'm sure there have already been these debates taking place in living rooms throughout the country since the teams' last game in the 2006 Olympics when they team plummeted from golden boys to seventh.

So I suppose it's never too early for fans to start building up the hockey pedestal in the hopes that the team won't take another unsightly tumble.
