Album Review: Fiery concept for debut

A Dozen Furies is the band that won the first ever Battle for Ozzfest contest last year. I never paid much attention to the whole Ozzfest competition, because I figured it really wouldn't introduce me to any bands with substance. Boy, was I wrong when I checked these guys out at the Drink when they opened for In Flames a few months ago. A Dozen Furies put on the second best performance of the night and rocked the place, only falling short to the headliners.

A Dozen Furies released their debut album, a Concept from Fire, a few weeks ago and after spending some time with it, I'm really impressed with what I've heard. The CD is definitely metal, but the band seems to cross many different sub genres of metal.

The first few tracks have that In Flames, Arch Enemy, Shadows Fall feeling. The band then crosses into some songs that you could almost mistake for the Deftones. You'll also hear the band experiment a bit with the nu-metal sound but then go into something from the hardcore feel.

The mixing of different metal genres work well and all the members of the band are really talented in the performance and arrangement areas. This is a strong debut from a metal band and every song is different, which makes this one an easy CD to listen to front to back. I can't wait for the sophomore effort and you shouldn't wait to pick this one up. 9 out of 10.
