The Trews return to Fanshawe

In less than one month The Trews opened for the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin alumnus Robert Plant, two accomplishments most Canadian bands only dream about, which is why this band deserves the self-proclaimed title of hardest working band in Canada.

The Trews originally hail from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, but in recent years the band migrated west to Niagara Falls where they now call home. They have been on the road for the entirety of their music career, playing over 400 shows in only two years. All that time spent together on the road definitely secured their hard working-persona.

The Trews

The band has a right to be so close considering lead vocalist Colin MacDonald and guitar player Angus MacDonald are brothers. They are backed up by their cousin Sean Dalton on drums and longtime friend and bass player Jack Syperek.

Their debut album, entitled House of Ill Fame, was released in 2003 and re-released in 2004 under the Sony-BMG label. The Trews second single from that album, “Not Ready to Go,” was a huge hit on MuchMusic and was named the number one most played track on the Canadian Rock Chart for radio in 2004.

Their sophomore album, Den of Thieves, was released in August. The release ironically happened just days after the band opened for the Rolling Stones at an intimate club show at the Phoenix in Toronto. Rumour has it that the band just wanted tickets to the limited seating show and ended up opening for the rock legends.

On The Trews Website, Colin MacDonald said opening for the Stones was, “an incredible, career defining moment. It felt amazing to share the stage with the greatest rock n' roll band on earth.”

They opened for Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant when he played 10 dates across Canada, which had them stopping at the JLC in September. With their loud sound and the odd guitar solo, the Trews were able to hold their own amongst hardcore Zeppelin fans.

The Trews have also played with Nickleback, Sam Roberts, Big Sugar, Evanescence and Finger 11, which are feats of their own given that their first CD came out only two years ago.

The band just released their new single “Yearning” in mid-October and has recently been nominated for the Canadian Artists Selected By You (CASBY) Award for Favourite New Album.

The Trews will be playing at Fanshawe in Forwell Hall on November 11. Tickets go on sale on November 1 at the Biz Booth and cost $8 for students and $10 for guests. The first 100 people to buy tickets will only pay $6.
