Letter to the editor... Standing up for our nation

RE: “The grass is greener” by Darius Mirshahi, published Monday, February 23, 2009

I won't be so bold as to challenge you're ability as a writer; I myself know my writing lacks commitment. Although to describe you're writing and more importantly you I would have to use words that are the polar opposites of honour and integrity. To evoke thoughts that our country is perfect would be foolish, but to think that we are living in a country driven on committing acts of socio-economic imperialism is in short insanity.

We have come a long way from our colonial roots, a nation built on hardships, wars and triumphs. As I sing O' Canada at a hockey game, I look towards a flag that represents more than just our history. It represents our freedoms that we tend to forget about from time to time. Freedoms that our history afforded us, these freedoms came at a price of thousands of young men's lives, blood spilt at the killing fields in World War One and on Juno Beach in the Second World War.

Darius do you really think that all conflicts could be avoided without the use of armed force? History has proven that sometimes peace and stability will only come through the barrel of a gun. We tried to reason with Hilter, and yet it only gave him more time to establish a more efficient plan to exterminate millions of Jews.

In the Bosnian War without the intervention of Canadian Forces thousands of more innocent civilians would have been slaughtered. I will say my last example might not be Canada's finest hour of peace keeping, but I must stay on task and deal with your suggestive comments.

Saying “ ‘Our' nation, like most nations, is built on genocide, continued colonization and aggression towards outsiders,” is a slap in the face to every citizen and immigrant that resides between our borders. If we are to judge developed nations and hold them accountable for their actions it would be hard to say that Canada breeds hatred overseas. I would also be hard pressed to find examples of genocide committed at the hands of any Canadian Administration. As for aggression towards outsiders, most of my family immigrated to Canada after the Second World War, yes figure that one out. Italians once allies of Nazi Germany at the onset of the Second World War moving to Canada after we killed thousands of their soldiers.

Go on, fight your non-existent war on oppression and tear down those invisible walls. Behind those walls, you will find me and many others who will not be quiet. Who are going to stand up and speak out against you. Liberals, moderates and conservatives we will make our voices heard to anyone who cares to listen. What you have forgotten is Canada was a nation founded by blood spilt, this blood ensures our freedoms; of speech, education, sex, religion and ethnicity.

I will not stand by and read article upon article containing defamatory comments about our dominion in which we all reside in. As I respond to your less than eloquent blast on Canada and her history remember in retreat the great General Douglas MacArthur said “I shall return”. Return I shall, rebutting all your leftist ideals and false history.
