The Neighbourhood Mechanic: Recalls a good thing

It always surprises me that when a manufacturer has a recall campaign it's looked upon in a negative light. In the case of recalls, negativity is all wrong. Recalls are basically product up-dates. Throughout any products life cycle, failure or operating conditions may require changes in specifications. You must remember these products (cars to baby buggies) are used worldwide in varying conditions. As “in the field” information comes in, responsible manufacturers will step up and rectify the situation. If you have received a recall notice from your manufacturer react positively. Take the time and respond. The latest recall information (cars and trucks) is available at Transport Canada's website http://www.tc.gc.ca

Dave,
I have a 2000 Malibu with a V6 engine. I have been having problems with intermittent signal lights for about the past six months and can't seem to solve it. The signals will work for days and then they will stop. After a few starts and stops they will start working again. When the signal lights are working and you put on the four way flashers then the signal lights will immediately quit working. Have you run into this problem in the past and is it the four way signal module or the signal light switch in the steering column. Is it possible there may be a GM recall for this problem?

The problem may be as simple as a faulty flasher. Try and locate a wiring diagram. Do the tests for grounding and power. Once you have established there are no issues with the circuits, swap out the unit. The system should be functioning normally. Should this not solve the issue contact a tech. As far as recalls are concerned I found this GM recall. “Product Safety campaign 03043A relates to turn signals and hazard flashers inoperative.”
