Tips to stay safe this summer

The weather's warming up, the clothes get lighter and everything seems more carefree — no school, fewer responsibilities, it's no wonder people are just itching for summer once May hits.

However, just because the school year's over and the days are longer doesn't mean everything's as worry-free as it seems.

It's paramount that during the free-wheeling fun of summer, you keep an eye on yourself and your friends, so here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

- No matter how nice it is outside, do not think you can just walk home from the bar alone. Anything can happen during any distance. Always bring a friend.

- Don't have money for a cab? Be responsible and plan a ride beforehand if you anticipate this happening.

- Of course, don't just grab a ride from anyone and don't let just anyone accompany you home. Be smart.

- Even if you're out and get a little tipsy, don't get so wasted you're not aware of your surroundings. Stay sharp on where you are.

- On the same note — when you are on your way home, keep an eye out for stores that are still open and people who are home, these are areas you can run to if you need help.

- See that dark deserted shortcut? Avoid. Stay in well-lit areas, that's a given.

- Even if you're the designated driver, safety's still important. Give your car a once over before you get in, someone could be inside.

- If you are in trouble — scream. Keep doing so until help arrives or you can reach safety.
