New ball hockey location in London
Ball Hockey International are
about to launch their latest site in
London, located on Clarke Rd. at
Hamilton, near East Park. With
current locations operating in
Welland, Orillia, Brantford, and
St. Catherine's, BHi is excited
about the launch of their latest
facility, said Dan Gilbert, BHi
London facilities manager.
BHi hosted a launch party at their new location, the Curinga Italian Canadian Sport Club on Saturday, May 1, 2010. BHi employees were on hand to answer questions, register interested participants, and demonstrate the coming facilities with a mini-rink, set up outside the clubhouse.
“It rained in the morning, which I think deterred a few people from coming out,” said Gilbert. “But we still had teams registering, still had over 200 visitors, I'd give it a good seven out of ten.”
The summer season kicks off the week of June 7, and will begin with teams in divisions across three age categories - youth, teens, and adult. For adults, there are men's divisions A—D and 30-plus, and a women's and co-ed division as well. Cutoff for summer registration is May 29.
The plans for expansion were illustrated in banners on the walls of the clubhouse, with phase one nearly complete. Phase one begins with one rink and increased parking space, and is scheduled for completion on May 19.
Phases two through four, which sees an increase in rinks and parking space, will happen as the demand arises; scheduling in place allows BHi to accommodate seventy teams per rink.
“The more teams that register, the more we'll be running through building the rinks,” said Gilbert. “It's our hope to have all four phases complete within the next four or five years.”
For Gilbert, BHi coming to London is the realization of the past two years worth of hard work; beginning when his factory job ended, he decided to work to bring a structured ball hockey facility to London and began to secure the London location at the Curinga Club. He took a few months to put together a business plan and wound up partnering with BHi, who had become successful in four other communities and had been eyeing London for some time.
To promote the new facilities, BHi London are setting up minirinks on location at CBC Hockey Night in Canada's Play On! Tournament on May 29 and 30. Additionally, they're sending their referees down to Brantford to help out in the Walter Gretzky 3rd Annual Street Hockey Tournament from June 4 to 6.
And though BHi's Canada Day tournament won't take place in London this summer, watch out for them to host a tournament here on or around the long weekend in August.
