Falcon Volleyball teams start season with strong play

Both the men's and women's teams kicked things off in fine fashion by winning a gold and bronze medal respectively during the Eighth Annual Overkill Fanshawe College Volleyball Kick-Off Tournament.

On the men's side, the Falcons flew through the tournament undefeated, going 5-0 in tournament action that culminated in a thrilling three set gold medal match victory over the visiting Mohawk Mountaineers. After taking the opening set 25-18, the Falcons let Mohawk back into the match by dropping the second set 19-25. The third and deciding set of the gold medal match was a nail-biter that came right down to the wire before the Falcons were able to prevail 15-13 to capture the tournament championship. Fanshawe Falcon Matt Wilson was named to the tournament all star team, while his Falcon teammate Andrew Thorpe was named tournament MVP.

It was a strong start to the season for a mix of returning and new players that coach Rob Thorpe hopes will be able to complete for the OCAA Championships this season being hosted by Seneca College. The men continue their pre-season over the next couple weeks with an exhibition match at home on Tuesday, October 12 versus the Western Mustangs. Following the pre-season schedule, the Falcons open regular season action on Wednesday, October 20 at home against the St. Clair Saints.

In women's action, the Falcon team made it through Saturday's tournament 3-0 by defeating the Georgian Grizzlies in straight sets, 25-18, 25-14 to open tournament play, before defeating Cambrian College in a hard fought three set match 24-26, 25-20, 15-12. The women wrapped up Saturday's action by defeating the Seneca Sting in straight sets 25-17, 25-17. In Sunday's semi-final match, the Falcons would face Cambrian College once again, this time dropping the match in straight sets 25- 23, 25-17.

However, the women were able to re-group and overcome the semi-final adversity to capture the bronze medal in an exciting 25-17, 23-25, 15-7 victory over the St. Clair Saints. Fanshawe Falcons' Stacie Thomas was named to the tournament all-star team after a strong tournament.

Women's head coach Lloyd Rumble is hoping a strong returning class led by team captain Katie Reist, as well as a strong recruiting class, will be able to achieve the overall goal of winning a medal at this year's OCAA championships. The women continue their pre-season play. The Falcons open their regular season against the St. Clair Saints on Wednesday, October 20.
