Impaired driving still a problem

A ten-hour RIDE program dealt with nearly 1,800 motorists over the New Year's weekend.

Of the motorists who participated in the RIDE program, only two were required to be tested roadside, and both passed. One driver tried to avoid the RIDE spotcheck. Police dealt with him in a nearby parking lot and arrested him for impaired driving.

"Those numbers certainly reflected a conscious effort on the part of London motorists to do the right thing and not drive after drinking," according to London Police Services.

Motorists were less conscious of the right thing on New Year's eve and day, as patrol officers arrested eight drivers for impaired driving offences. Three of these offences involved collisions. Six of the eight drivers had a blood alcohol concentration of nearly two times the legal limit. All but one of the drivers were male and all were over the legal drinking age.
