Fanshawe College still home to proud hockey tradition

Although the final buzzer sounded on Ontario Colleges Athletics Association varsity men's hockey following the 2004 season, Fanshawe College has long been home to a proud hockey program.

With 34 men's league teams as well as four women's teams, featuring over 700 players taking to the ice during the 2010/2011 academic year in campus recreational leagues, it is clear that hockey is still amongst the most popular sports offered at Fanshawe College.

While the men still continue to dominate the number of players, it's the women's program that is preparing for inter-collegiate action in the coming weeks. Along with the four-team campus recreational women's ice hockey leagues, Fanshawe College has also selected a team that will be taking on other Ontario colleges in women's hockey action in the upcoming weeks, starting next weekend with a tournament hosted by Conestoga College.

The head coach of the women's hockey team, Eric Collins, seemed to be very excited about the team he has assembled for tournament play. "It's a group we are very confident and excited about for the 2010/2011 tournament season," he said. Collins will be looking for strong goaltending from Woodstock, Ontario native Hilary Heighton, as well as Natalie Harvey, to lead the team who he has high hopes for.

Collins was very adamant about the gender equality that Fanshawe College brings, and will continue to bring to the Fanshawe hockey program.
