(Most) candidates tackle the issues

With one no show and the remaining candidates apologizing for every interruption, the FSU presidential debate was more of a friendly chat than a heated, opinion-fueled discussion.

Greg Buckrell, Christine Thompson and Dan Vernooy, who failed to attend the debate, will be the names on the presidential ballot for the 2006/07 election, which will take place online from Monday, February 13 until Thursday, February 16.

Buckrell and Thompson tried their best to debate over issues like under-age drinking, communication and the tuition-freeze, but the pair ended up agreeing with each other on most topics.

Presidential hopefuls Christine Thomson and Greg Buckrell faced off during the FSU debate Wednesday.

The only real disagreement came when the two squared off over city transportation.

Thompson argued that students are having a tough time getting to and from campus, while Buckrell thought the city bus routes are more than sufficient for students to get from one end of the city to the other.

On more than one occasion, Thompson, who has been an executive for two years, had to inform Buckrell about current initiatives and policies he was unaware of.

This not only looks bad on Buckrell for being unprepared during the debate, but it also looked bad for the FSU and the current executive for their lack of communication with the student body.

Addressing the student knowledge and involvement dilemmas, Thompson said she would attend more program events on nights and weekends in order to better understand the issues students are dealing with.

“If I was elected I wouldn't look at this as a 40 hour a week job. I would work until the job is done,” Thompson said.

Buckrell emphasized Fanshawe's need to have more citywide exposure and suggested beginning a weekly athletics update in the London Free Press.

His platform concentrates on bringing students together and creating more student involvement in the FSU, but Buckrell forgot to give any clear examples of how he would do this as president.

Thompson shot down Buckrell's suggestion of more come and go parking lots, explaining to him that the college has turned the FSU down for years on that issue.

Buckrell addressed his inexperience and explained that he would bring a new face to the FSU and move it in a different direction.

Thompson rebutted by saying new faces are for executive council positions and that if she is elected she would begin working immediately and not wait until May, when her term officially begins.
