The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) has selected Fanshawe College as its host for the softball OCAA Championships from Oct. 20-22 and the men’s volleyball OCAA Championships from Feb 23-25, 2023. Softball Championship games will be played in the Alumni Field and volleyball Championship games will be played at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.

Previously, Fanshawe hosted Championships for softball in 2019 and men’s volleyball in 2017. Last year was tough, as COVID restrictions affected both teams’ seasons and attendance rates. This year however, students can watch games in person with the relaxation of restrictions.

Fanshawe Athletics said it is excited to welcome the top softball student-athletes in the province to Alumni Field this upcoming fall and the Falcons team is excited to get more spectators back in the seats to watch their games.

The softball team’s next game versus the Seneca Sting is scheduled to be played on Sept. 10 at home in Alumni Field.

Men’s volleyball coach Patrick Johnston said he couldn’t wait to “pack the nest” for the upcoming men’s volleyball season and the OCAA Championship.

“Back in 2017 we hosted the CCAA National Championships,” Johnston said. “The City of London and the College packed the Fanshawe gym and I hope we can do the same this coming February. This [college] has always been a volleyball hotbed and I trust we can give the volleyball community a great show.”

He added that he’s hopeful this season will be a return to normal after last year’s COVID-impacted schedule.

“Last season was definitely a disappointment,” he said. “We lost to Mohawk in the Crossover Round. It was a half-season with nine regular season games and compressed into about a month. As a coach who enjoys the season planning process, I can’t wait to have a typical schedule again.”

The men’s volleyball season opener will be held Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. against Humber.

“Be there!” Johnston said.
