Student could be next Rogers VJ

With a job description that includes interviewing bands, throwing to commercial and hanging out in clubs until the wee hours of the morning, what London twenty-something wouldn't want to be hired.

Rogers London (Cable 13) newest and hottest show, “London Calling,” recently scoured the city in search of talented on-air personalities to be part of the production. Their open search attracted over sixty applicants, which included some from Fanshawe's Media Theory and Production program.

“London Calling,” along with hosts Drew Skitt and Deneen Kavinsky, is a half-hour show aimed at highlighting London's booming independent music and culture scene.

“It's a fast paced look at independent music, cultural and arts scene in London,” said Skitt, who covers local news for Rogers “First Local” program. “London has been dying to have a place where our music, our scene can represented.”

After interviews, the “London Calling” production team narrowed the field down to 25 hopefuls, which include Fanshawe's own Christina Benjamin, Natalie Lovie and Meagan Kerr.

The finalists will have a chance to mingle with local bands on Wednesday, January 17 at London Tap House, 545 Richmond Street, when the televised VJ Showdown will narrow its search. The line-up for the evening includes Orlando Valencia and his Pachanga Band, Matthew Johnson, Dutch, DJ Everfresh, Staylefish and is hosted by London's Funniest Person winner, Ian Lynch.

Skitt said they are looking for a person who will mesh well with the already established production team, but not necessarily a personality with on-air experience.

“We are looking for someone who is super motivated to bring London's independent music scene to the forefront,” added Skitt.

“In an ideal world we would hope a couple people would take on different roles,” Skitt said, who is also looking for the right people who are willing to work behind the scenes.

The chosen VJ will work between five and six hours a week covering independent bands, cultural events and local art.

The VJ Showdown at London Tap House begins at 9pm; tickets are $7, and who knows - you could help launch the career of an up-and-coming VJ.

“London Calling” airs Friday nights after the Knights (between 10pm and 11pm) Saturday at 2am and Sunday at 10pm on Rogers.
