Bridal fashion: What goes around comes back around

Through the many years of weddings, we have seen every type of bridal gown go in and out of style.

A wedding dress can be the most expensive outfit a person wears in their life and can be a way to showcase their personal style. The price of wedding dresses averages $1,500 to $2,500, according to Opportunity Bridal.

Through the years, we have seen different wedding dress styles come and go, including ball gowns, A-line, lace and jewels, as well as just plain dresses. Many styles that were high fashion back in the day have since come back in style in some way or another.

“My friend is getting married and I’m noticing little, tiny straps and form-fitting dresses are in. I feel like people are showing off their curves but in a classy way like low-back dresses, and ballroom gowns are going out of style,” said Fanshawe interior design student, Lauryn Neil.

Ball gowns were the first ‘in’ wedding dress, dating back to 1840, according to Elle magazine. The ball gown style remained the fit of choice until the 1900s, where more loose and relaxed dresses became the phenomenon. Dresses were all very modest at this time with sleeves and high necklines. This has since changed with low back and front dresses becoming fairly common among brides, however both these styles are still chosen often when picking out dresses.

“I feel like pearl white dresses, not normal white, are very in right now, with tighter skirts or mermaid-style skirts,” Fanshawe radio broadcasting graduate, Amber Weiss said. “I think it’s a hot take, but I think veils are out and people aren’t really going crazy with accessories and going more with dainty jewelry. But I want to see that come back, I want a huge, big bow in my hair for my wedding.”

Elaborate headpieces were brought into the wedding world in the 1920s, according to Elle, with brides wearing floral headpieces, tiaras, crowns and more. Although veils still have a very prominent place in bridal shops, there are now brides who choose to go for just a head piece or even nothing at all. Around this time, brides started getting riskier with the length of their gowns as well. Don’t get me wrong, we are still much riskier today than they ever were, but they began paving that path back in the 1920s.

Brides began choosing more minimalist styles back in the 1930s, according to Elle, with silk and satin dresses being the popular choice during this time. This is when we began seeing more of a minimalist take on wedding fashion.

Lace and over-the-top headpieces came back in the 1980s, according to Elle, and we are seeing lace everywhere today when looking at wedding dresses.

“I feel like wedding dresses are very unique to the bride and it’s different for every person,” Fanshawe art science graduate, Dina Mofatt said. “More lace details are coming back, and I think chunky accessories are coming back, I think people are really going for the vintage look like Lily Collins.”

Famous people and royalty remain role models for brides, but at the end of the day, your wedding dress should be unique to you because even if the dress goes out of style, it will always come back around in a couple decades.
